CHAPTER 4. COURSE DESIGN EDUCATION METHOD CLASS PLAN activity results (Figure 4-1). These attainment goals belong to the performance goals in Kajita’s goal type (Figure 4-2) and the attainment level will be confirmed by whether or not the goals have been able to be followed as prescribed goals. As the evaluation methods, there are written tests, reports, observation of students’behaviors in class and the degree of their participation in class, students’ presentations, exercises, etc. and select the one according to the attainment goal. After setting the attainment goals, decide the evaluation methods and select appropriate education methods to attain the goals. In the field of educational engineering, there are two different teaching and learning theories which are Behaviorism and Constructivism. Behaviorism is talked in the image of Brick Work. The systematic teaching and learning methods, like building up from the basics to the application in a step-by-step manner through mass teaching and lectures by teachers, are adopted. This is effective in fostering knowledge and skills. Constructivism adopts the teaching and learning methods that learners actively construct knowledge in the interpersonal network. Active learning, etc. represents this which is effective in improving abilities for thinking and judgment, interests, and motivation and changing attitude. The education plan is to prepare and allocate education contents to the given class slots (hours, frames) in order for students to be able to attain education goals in class. In the regular courses in Japan, one slot (also referred to as class) of 90 minutes x 15 times per subject (two academic credits) is arranged. When class is intended for regular students (full-time students), a schedule will be usually set that a 90-minute class which will be implemented for 15 times will be divided into 15 weeks and implemented on weekdays. In contrast, when class is intended for adult students (part-time students), a class schedule may be set to be concentrated on specified days such as Saturdays and Sundays (for example, giving an intensive lecture to be implemented on Saturday for 90 minutes x 5 times for a three-week period, etc.) because students’ commutable days are limited. In this case, you need to be creative with lectures, exercises, education materials, assignments, etc. for the students to be able to attain education goals even with the tight class schedule.
